Hi folks
I participated in a computing diploma a decade ago but have forgotten almost everything.
What I would like to do is write a fairly simple program that observes/records the passage of days. Day keeping it is called. It used to be done as a profession for the ancients in Guatemala known as the Maya.
I understand that Java or Java Script (I do not know the difference) might be the direction to go in. I do not want to do a degree in this subject or pay £1500 for a 5-day course.
Do you know a good website with learning tools?
Can you recommend a good book to start with?
Do you feel like a wee programming project?
For an example of calendar software have a look here:

Re: Writing Calendar Software
Wed, April 6, 2005 - 11:06 AMHey O,
I'm not sure from your description what it is you want, and the page you gave a link to has a TON of info on a variety of topics.
From your description, it almost sounds like you want a blog.
Please explain a little more what you want to do

Thu, April 7, 2005 - 9:35 AMHi ;-)
Thanks for the interest!
Yup, that page is full!
You can read about my work on the torch of life at :
www.spirit-of-yggdrasil.com . . . which will give you background if you would like it.
Specifically though . . .
I would like a prog that displays data on a daily basis. I am a day keeper, that is I study the fractal of time as an ongoing synchronic event. I watch the Long Count of the Quiche Maya and the Dreamspell 13 Moon Synchronometer. The prog is to observe the intricacies of the Arcturian Shield Program (ASP). The ASP emerged out of the runic geometry of the Torch. It is a fairly complex story, which is on line at my site.
If you google 'Arcturian Shield Program' you will find a few links to my site on this subject.
The ASP is a fractal time package that is unfurling itself in the collective mind. It is comprised of 33 perpetual and simultaneous cycles (divisions of the core fractal 28080), primarily though a count of days from 1 to 28080.
For instance there is a cycle of days: 260 x 108 where each of the 108 has a name associated with it dedicated to the mother of all Buddhas. Another is 390 x 72 where each of the 72 is associated with one of the names of God in Hebrew. Each cycle is associated with a subject sacred to humanity. You could say it is a complex calendar of enlightenment cycles. However the word calendar means accounts book and this has nothing to do with money.
I know that a blog is not what I am after as I also wish to be able to utilise the power of a computer to 'surf' backwards and forwards through the fractal quickly observing the different qualities of days.

My first thought is to find one of the websites where you can have a programmer from india or china bid on the project.
If you decide to tackle it yourself, and feel that java is the way to go, Bruce Eckel's "Thinking in Java" will take you into the language better than any book I can think of.
Nice feature: It's available for free online. I believe you can follow the links from www.bruceeckel.com

Fri, April 8, 2005 - 12:57 AMHi Brian
Thanks for the input . . . I have downloaded the book. Have to admit it still looks somewhat daunting even if it has been written for the nubie!
I had not concidered haveing someone bid on the project? any ideas where to look? -

Sat, April 9, 2005 - 2:19 AMThanks guys!
It will be good to know how much it would cost to write. I dont imagine it is a difficult program for one who knows how to code.

Sun, April 10, 2005 - 7:33 PMYou might try Elance.com also. I have had great luck there. Overseas programmers in India and East Europe are very competitve.
I think spending your time spec'ing out what you want in detail and posting for bids would be the thing to do.
