these certifications worth the effort? help anyone out here when it comes to getting a job?

are they respected?

    I've been working with Java since 1995. I'm not certified, and I've never had any problems getting a job -- but then, I live in the SF Bay Area. The only reasons I would tell anyone to become certified are 1) if they are new to the language (or to software development in general) and need an edge to get them noticed by recruiters, or 2) if they are in a locale where development work is hard to come by.
