Does anyone know of anyplace that might be looking for some free Java Development Services or Services at a low, low price ? Think "would you like burgers with those fries low price." Right now I am being told that I don't have enough experience to get "senior" positions. Also I haven't worked in a while within the field. Right now I need to get something to show someone that I can do J2EE programming. If there are any non profits or anything else. I would really be interested in short term jobs.

By the way I wouldn't be be opposed to doing open source projects either. Just don't want to jump into anything too deep.

I haven't seen an open-sourced project yet that didn't need help with documentation. Thats'a good way to learn the code without accidentally doing something wrong.

I think that might just teach him how to write better documentation.

There's nothing stopping him from just contributing code.
If its good they will include it in the code base.

Actually I am doing documentation for companies already and hate it. What I need to do is code. Any good suggestions for open source projects? I already know apache has alot of them? Also do you have any advice about contributing to an open source project?

Most opensource projects have a project website with information for those that want to contribute. Or if not, you can always email the person in charge of the project.

The only opensource projects i've been inclined to contribute code to are ones i've been using and wanted to add or extend some functionality of. In the end it always turns out someone else though of it and its on its way in the next release.

As far as resume building, you could also try craigslist and look for freelance projects.

In the past sometimes i have done a LOT of studying on my own and then fudge'd the resume because i was *positive* i could make it through an intensive interview on the subject matter.

Universities are getting hip to open source. Check out JASIG uPortal
uportal.org/ and Sakai www.sakaiproject.org/, and related open source projects (apache projects and friends). I figure universities with large endowments are safe habors when the economy goes south - if you are familiar with those products you may be able to pick up on some work on that front.
